Elderly Indonesian jailed, fined for cheating
KOTA KINABALU: A 74year-old man was jailed and fined by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for cheating a self-employed man.
Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus sentenced Indonesian Hamsah Arsad Abdul Manan to 24 months’ jail and a fine of RM3,000, in default, two months’ jail after he admitted to the charge framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
The offence carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping and liable to a fine, upon conviction.
The unrepresented accused was apprehended for deceiving the 49-year-old man of RM7,000 over the purchase of rice at the Customs Port here on October 31, 2015.
In an unrelated case, a Filipina was jailed for 11 months by another Magistrate’s Court here for soliciting for the purpose prostitution.
Ima Mhd, 22, pleaded guilty before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun, to a charge under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine or both, upon conviction.
The accused was arrested for committing the offence at a room of a hotel at Jalan Pantai here on August 3.
Both Hamsah and Ima were also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after their jail terms for further action.
