KUALA TERENGGANU: Muhammad Amin Zainuddin was surprised that his wife had signed up for the 2017 mass marriage ceremony without consulting him, but deep down he was thankful as their wedding date was brought forward.

For Muhammad Amin, 24, the action taken by his wife Noraini Omar, 23, to join in the mass marriage ceremony was actually a blessing.

“We had planned to get married in March next year … but when I found out my wife had filled in the mass wedding form, I felt relieved and thankful as it was a great help to us.

“In this way we don’t have to spend much on the wedding… and the money we had saved can now be used for other purposes. After this we will participate in the Terengganu Family Development Foundation (YPKT) programme,” he told reporters at the mass marriage reception ceremony at the Islamic Civilization Park yesterday.

Also present were Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, State Assembly Speaker Datuk Zubir Embong, State Secretary Datuk Wan Nawawi Wan Ismail and State Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Roslee Daud.

Muhammad Amin and his bride were among 271 couples who were celebrated in a mass marriage which made it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Biggest Marriage Solemnisation Ceremony’ in Malaysia.

Last year, 217 couples were celebrated as they tied the knot in the mass wedding ceremony.

Of the 217 couples, 108 couples have been blessed with children while 31 others are expecting their newborn. - Bernama
