English corner launched at Inanam school
KOTA KINABALU: The Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl (RCKK Pearl) Sabah together with the Sabah Education Department has launched an English Corner at SK Pomotodon recently.
The event falls under RCKK Pearl’s signature project REAL (Rural Focus-English For All).
This project REAL initially started with three (3) schools last year comprising of SK St Edmund, Kota Belud; SK Kawang; Papar; and SK Pekan, Kiulu.
This year, the RCKK Pearl will carry out the same project at three other schools, namely SK Pomotodon, Inanam; SK Mandalipau, Papar; and SK Rugarding, Tuaran.
RCKK Pearl will continue to implement its project REAL by launching English Corners in more rural schools if its finances so permit.
Project REAL is not only committed to setting up the English corners each with approximately 700 books, providing computers and pleasant as well as conducive English area complete with floor mats and cushions for reading comfort, but also aims to bridge the gap between rural and urban schools in terms of English proficiency.
One way to see progress in the students’ English Proficiency can be monitored through the exam results.
Two activities had been organised recently under the project REAL which are the Interschool Competition and the Teachers Training workshop. Through such competition and workshops, the talents of students can be discovered and their talent can be developed further.
Apart from the schools, the aim is having a conducive environment to provide more opportunity for students to use the English language.
The event was successfully launched with the effort and assistance of the Education Department, the District Education Liaison officers, the school headmaster, English teachers as well as the participation of the students.
