Il­le­gal re­turns and com­mits rob­bery

TAWAU: Po­lice have de­tained a 37-year-old il­le­gal im­mi­grant who tried to rob a con­ve­nience store at Jalan Kuhara here at mid­night.

District po­lice chief, ACP Fadil Mar­sus said the sus­pect wear­ing a mask and hel­met had barged into the store and pointed a sa­mu­rai sword at the counter staff while de­mand­ing for cash.

How­ever, a po­lice team on crime pre­ven­tion pa­trol hap­pened to be in the area and saw the in­ci­dent. They rushed into the store within a minute and shouted, “Po­lice!” but the sus­pect would not co­op­er­ate forc­ing the per­son­nel to use min­i­mal ag­gres­sion to ac­cost him, said Fadil.

Po­lice seized a sword, screw­driver and face mask, he said in a state­ment here yes­ter­day.

Fadil said In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed the sus­pect also tested pos­i­tive for syabu, had a pre­vi­ous con­vic­tion record for drugs and il­le­gal en­try and was de­ported to the Philip­pines in 2006, un­der Sec­tion 6(1)© of the Im­mi­gra­tion Act 1959/63.
