Thai prostitute jailed for six months

KOTA KINABALU: A woman from Thailand was sentenced to six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for soliciting for the purpose of prostituti­on.

Kwanruean Chaiwanit, 34, who was brought before magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus, admitted to committing the offence at a hotel room in Penampang on May 26.

The offence was framed under Section 372B of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to one year or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Prosecutin­g officer Inspector Albert Basiri told the court that a police team raided the room after receiving a tip-off about the vice activities there.

During the raid, the police had knocked on the room’s door and it was opened by a man, who later admitted that he had received sex service from the accused and the police had seized several items which were some used and unused condoms and RM480 in cash.

In an unrelated case, a foreign man was jailed for 10 months by the same court for consuming syabu.

Molo Finsensius Laga, 23, had pleaded guilty to consuming the drug and was arrested in Inanam on March 13 after his urine sample tested positive for the drug abuse.

The court also ordered the two accused persons to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department after serving their jail sentences for further action.

The same court also sentenced man to 16 months’ imprisonme­nt for trying to steal two tyres together with their rims.

Magistrate Cindy imposed the sentence on Mohd Fazly Basli, 31, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same Code.

The indictment carries a jail term of up to three years and six months or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The accused who committed the offence with an accomplice who is still at large, was arrested at a premises in Inanam on July 4.
