Jamilah gets emotional during debate on Land Code

-

TANJUNG DATU assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu got emotional during the debate on the Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2018 when she recalled the nostalgic words of her late husband and former chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem who was also fondly called Tok Nan.

In her speech, Jamilah said Tok Nan used to say “Jagalah Sarawak benar-benar”, if you care and love Sarawak, you must protect it at all costs.

“On many occasions, he also said that only Sarawakians can protect, defend and fight for Sarawak. This statement is now a clarion call of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). We Sarawakians will decide our destiny! Now, tomorrow and forever,” said Jamilah to the august House.

While holding back tears, she also expressed her support to the Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2018 which was tabled by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas earlier in the day.

According to Jamilah, the bill will further strenghten the harmonious relationship among the native Bumiputeras as it will include the Native Customary Rights (NCR) lands.

Under the Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2018, it will be based on the “Native Territorial Domain (NTD)” principle which fits the needs of the Pemakai Menua customs of the Iban community.

Areas for “pakai carik makan” which is used by the people living in coastal areas such as the Malays, Kedayan, Jati Miriek and Melanau can also be defined under the amendment.

She also congratulated Uggah and his team for the NTD principle which is used by other countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

“The NTD will also include the usufructuary rights to a native community,” said Jamilah adding that the Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2018 will continue to safeguard the harmonious lifestyle of Sarawakians.
