Upgrade of 424 telecommunication towers in Sarawak by year-end, says Salleh

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Upgrading work on 424 existing telecommunication towers in Sarawak to provide better 3G or LTE coverage are expected to be fully completed by year-end.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said the upgrading process covered all 438 community WiFi coverage areas in the state.

“The government is studying a proposal to continue with community WiFi service by taking into consideration 3G service and coverage, as well as the other technical aspects.

The government is implementing the upgrade of 3G broadband or LTE coverage which could give better speed compared to present community WiFi,” he said when winding up the debate on the motion of thanks on the royal address by Yang di- Pertuan Agong for his ministry at Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.

Elaborating on community WiFi, Salleh said the service was a WiFi hotspot and not an Internet centre.

He said the facility was only temporary to provide Internet service to residents with limited coverage or access in Sarawak.

“The service (community WiFi) will be terminated as soon as the area is provided with 3G service which is of higher quality and more stable in general,” he added. — Bernama
