Fire ren­ders fif­teen fam­i­lies homeless

SIMUN­JAN: Fif­teen fam­i­lies were made homeless af­ter a fire razed a six- door long­house and five in­di­vid­ual houses late Wed­nes­day night.

The in­ci­dent at Kam­pung Sek­endu here oc­cured around 11.45pm and quickly de­stroyed a six- door long­house be­fore rapidly spread­ing to five ad­ja­cent homes so fast that the oc­cu­pants were un­able to sal­vage much of any­thing.

Per­son­nel from the Simun­jan fire sta­tion, lo­cated about four kilo­me­tres away, ar­rived at the scene at 11.53pm fol­low­ing a dis­tress call and were able to bring the sit­u­a­tion un­der con­trol around 12.30am.

Mean­while, Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri ex­pressed her sad­ness over the in­ci­dent and said she will be vis­it­ing the fire vic­tims this Satur­day.

The Min­is­ter in the Prime Min­is­ter’s De­part­ment added she has di­rected im­me­di­ate aid to be sent to those af­fected.

“My staff is al­ready at the scene to dis­burse emer­gency aid to the vic­tims, and I will be vis­it­ing them as well as hand­ing over more aid when I ar­rive in Kuch­ing on Satur­day,” she said yes­ter­day.

The cause of the fire is be­ing in­ves­ti­gated, while to­tal losses suf­fered by the fam­i­lies have yet to be as­cer­tained.
