Rapid bus ser­vice pro­vides nec­es­sary ac­cess for peo­ple

KUALA LUMPUR: RapidKL buses trans­ported a daily av­er­age of 360,690 pas­sen­gers be­tween Jan­uary and Septem­ber this year, the De­wan Rakyat was told yes­ter­day.

Min­is­ter in the Prime Min­is­ter’s Depart­ment Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said RapidPe­nang buses trans­ported 80,000 pas­sen­gers daily and RapidKuan­tan buses, 10,000, over the same pe­riod.

“A to­tal of 1,147 RapidKL buses op­er­ate in and around Kuala Lumpur and Se­lan­gor; 382 buses pro­vide the RapidPe­nang and RapidKa­munt­ing ser­vice and 80, the RapidKuan­tan ser­vice.

“The buses serve iden­ti­fied so­cial routes and for the du­ra­tion of the ser­vice, in­clud­ing dur­ing off- peak hours,” she said when re­ply­ing to a ques­tion from Sim Tze Tzin ( PKR-Bayan Baru) on the op­er­a­tion of Rapid buses in all states and their daily av­er­age of pas­sen­gers.

Nancy said the bus ser­vice was an im­por­tant one that pro­vided ac­cess for the peo­ple in en­sur­ing their so­cio- eco­nomic ben­e­fits.

While re­ply­ing to a sup­ple­men­tary ques­tion, from Ru­biah Wang ( BN-Kota Sa­ma­ra­han), on the gov­ern­ment’s plan to im­prove the stage bus ser­vice in Kuch­ing and Kota Sa­ma­ra­han, Nancy said the process of se­lec­tion and ne­go­ti­a­tion had been com­pleted.

“The Kuch­ing Stage Bus Ser­vice Pro­gramme will be signed next week and the ser­vice can be en­joyed by the peo­ple of Kuch­ing next year.

“It is be­ing car­ried out in stages and the plan is to im­ple­ment it in each state cap­i­tal in the coun­try,” she said. — Ber­nama
