Sarawak-born artist holds solo ex­hi­bi­tion

KUCH­ING: Sarawak- born artist Nor­man Choo is hold­ing a solo ex­hi­bi­tion ‘ My Jour­ney Thus Far’ at Sar­adise Gallery, Level 1 Ti­ta­nium Tower un­til Dec 8.

Choo, who now re­sides in Canada, is a wa­ter colourist.

He has par­tic­i­pated in nu­mer­ous art ex­hi­bi­tions, won awards glob­ally, and is a mem­ber of sev­eral artists’ or­gan­i­sa­tions in Malaysia and Canada.

His works have been col­lected by mu­se­ums, in­sti­tu­tions and pri­vate in­di­vid­u­als in Malaysia, Tai­wan, China, Sin­ga­pore, Ja­pan, United States, Canada, and Poland.

Choo, whose work en­com­passes re­al­ism, im­pres­sion­ism, fau­vism, to cu­bism, semi- ab­strac­tions, and ab­stracts, has been called a tal­ented and ver­sa­tile painter by art en­thu­si­asts and col­lec­tors.

“The month- long ex­hi­bi­tion of my art­works is ded­i­cated to my late mother and my late grand­par­ents and also to my sis­ter,” he said be­fore the launch­ing of the ex­hi­bi­tion on Mon­day.

“The ex­hi­bi­tion is also to ac­knowl­edge my teach­ers dur­ing my for­ma­tive years though some were un­able to make it as they are no longer with us.”

Choo said his art teach­ers taught him the ba­sics of draw­ing, colours, and how to make his art­work vi­brant and ap­pre­ci­ated.

He also thanked Sar­adise Gallery for help­ing him and sup­port­ing lo­cal artists.

Sar­adise Sdn Bhd chief op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer Dy­lan Yee Kar Sein said the com­pany seeks to nur­ture the Sarawak brand by show­cas­ing the Sarawakian iden­tity through art.

“We set up the art gallery to work with lo­cal artist in or­der to show­case their art­works and at the same time to pro­mote Sarawak via their tal­ents and art­works,” he said.

“In the last two years we have worked with 828 lo­cal artists through work­shop ex­hi­bi­tions in art gal­leries around Kuch­ing.”

He said Sar­adise has also worked suc­cess­fully with in­ter­na­tional artists to help de­velop lo­cal young artists.
