SIBU: Sibu Tuai Rumah Association ( STRA) is asking that re- appointment letters for the tuai rumah ( headmen) be processed as soon as possible.

Its chairman TR Dieo Kanyan said 16 of their members have already expired their term (of service), but have yet to receive any re-appointment letters.

“My own term expired in January 2017, and until now I have not received any re-appointment letter,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Vice chairperson TR Catherine Tamoh Liom, secretary TR Peter Tinggom, treasurer TR Mathew Maja, and deputy treasurer TR Maling Banta were among those present at the press conference.

According to Dieo, he did not know the reason behind the delay of the issuance of reappointment letters.

He said only seven out of 16 headmen have received support from Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh based on a letter dated May 15, 2017.

“We do not know what the problem is since the assemblyman had given his support to these headmen for their service to be continued.

“If there is really a problem to warrant the re- appointment letters cannot be issued, then the relevant authority must inform the headmen or the association.

“We do not want to put a blame on anybody, we just want the relevant authority to speed up the issuance of re- appointment letters,” he said.

Dieo, from Tanjung Penasu, also said that without the official appointment letters, the headmen would have problem in carrying out their responsibilities as community leaders.

He also said the association could not elect the committee members because some of them, including ( Dieo) himself, have yet to receive the appointment letters.

STRA has 151 members, and the appointment of a tuai rumah is for a two-year term.

Meanwhile, TR Catherine said an appointment letter should be processed at least three months before the expiry date.

“Do not wait until the end of the term to process the appointment letters.”

She said the relevant parties had all the records of the headmen that are needed for the issuance of appointment letters.

Dieo (front centre) and his members show the letters regarding the issuance of appointment letters to the relevant authorities.
