Body of se­nior cit­i­zen re­cov­ered from sunken ve­hi­cle

KUCH­ING: The body of Barn­abas Lias – the se­nior cit­i­zen who went miss­ing af­ter his pickup truck plunged off a ferry at Batang Sa­ma­ra­han – was re­cov­ered along with his ve­hi­cle yes­ter­day.

The body of the 77-year- old was found in­side his four­wheeldrive ve­hi­cle af­ter res­cue per­son­nel over­came the strong river cur­rent to fish out the ve­hi­cle.

Fire and Res­cue Depart­ment ( Bomba) state as­sis­tant op­er­a­tions di­rec­tor Tiong Ling Hii said the process to re­cover the ve­hi­cle com­menced at noon when the wa­ter level sub­sided and flow of the wa­ter be­gan to slow down.

“The res­cue team was as­sisted by the Pub­lic Works Depart­ment (JKR) which pro­vided a crane to hoist the sunken ve­hi­cle. The de­ceased was sub­se­quently found in­side the ve­hi­cle and was ex­tri­cated at 3.11pm,” he told the me­dia at the Kota Sa­ma­ra­han ferry point, which was packed with more than 100 on­look­ers.

Barn­abas was trav­el­ling alone from Kota Sa­ma­ra­han to Asa­jaya on May 14 via the ferry ser­vice when the mishap oc­curred.

his pickup truck to pull the hand brake af­ter re­al­is­ing it was still mov­ing, but ended up plung­ing off the ferry to­gether with his ve­hi­cle.

The four- day search- an­dres­cue oper­a­tion in­volved Bomba, Ma­rine Police, Civil De­fence Force, army and JKR per­son­nel.

Res­cuers carry Barn­abas’ body to a police truck, to be sent to the hos­pi­tal.
