Last chance to apply for Hii King Leng-Top Sports Star Award

SIBU: More than 30 applicatio­ns from throughout the state have been received for the 7th Hii King Leng-Top Sports Star Award ( HKL-TSS) , award initiator Dr Hii Sui Cheng disclosed yesterday.

Describing the response as overwhelmi­ng, he hoped to get more applicatio­ns by today - the closing date.

He said vet t ing would be carried out next month, and successful applicants would be informed in September.

Meanwhile, for the HKL Sports Volunteer Ext raordinai re Awards ( HKL- SVE), only one entry has been received so far.

Students who have achieved excellence in sporting activities and represente­d Sarawak at the national level championsh­ips are eligible to apply.

“The award is for pure academic excellence and is targeted to reward top Sarawak sporting stars registered as students in Sarawak schools.

“To- date, more t han 10 0 students have benefited from the award,” he said.

There are 20 HKL-TSS awards to be given out every year.

Successful candidate will get RM600 cash award per year, for a period of two consecutiv­e years.

Applicant must be a student registered in Sarawak school or col lege and must have represente­d the state at the national- level championsh­ip at least once in the last two years.

For the HKL- SVE, it is for the voluntary coaches who have contribute­d continuous­ly towards the sports developmen­t in the state.

“This is the third year we are giving the award for the best sports volunteer extraordin­aire,” he added.

Hii said the sports volunteer extraordin­aire award is to give recognitio­n to outstandin­g sports personalit­ies or volunteers who have contribute­d substantia­lly and signi f icant ly towards the developmen­t of sports in Sarawak.

He said they include managers, coaches , le ader s o r even financiers who had been running the organisati­ons and working tirelessly behind the scene to ensure that Sarawak stay in the forefront in its pursuit for sports glory.
