SARAWAK Energy Bhd ( SEB) has been tasked with monitoring the load capacity of transformer units, including those in the rural areas.

As s i s t a nt M i n i s t e r o f Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi also told the august House yesterday that transformers that had exceeded the load capacity of 80 per cent would be upgraded.

“As for new projects under BELB (rural electricity supply), the cost for upgrading and installation of the transformers is included in the project cost, whi le for areas that are not under the implementation of BELB, the cost to upgrade the capacity of transformers comes under the responsibi lity of SEB,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is Pantai Damai assemblyman, said this in response to a question from Opar assemblyman Datuk Ranum Mina ( UPP- Opar), who asked if there was allocation from the ministry for upgrading lowcapacity transformers to highercapacity ones to accommodate rural electricity supply.

The allocations to implement BELB projects and transformers, said Dr Abdul Rahman, were ch annel le d by the Ru r a l Development and Regional Ministry.

“Moreover, the average cost to upgrade a transformer, from 50kVA to 160kVA (in capacity), i s est imated at RM2 0,0 0 0 – excluding installation cost, while the total cost including installation is about RM80,000,” he added.
