Call to set up educational, technical centres in Simunjan

-

A government backbencher yesterday said educational or technical centres need to be built in Simunjan to produce a more kwowledgeable and skilled youths.

Awla Dris ( PBB- Simunjan) suggested that centres such as Community College, Pusat Giat Mara and Centex be built in the constituency.

According to him, the setting up of such facilities by the Sarawak government would equip more youths with the necessary knowledge.

“Such facilities (in Simunjan), will provide learning and job opportunities to the people, particularly the youths and future generation ... and in the process reduce social ills,” he told the august House, when debating Head of State’s opening address.

Awla also pointed out that the centres were necessary considering that most school dropouts were from rural areas.

He also called on Sarawak government to set up Bumiputera Entrepreneur Centre in the area as a venue where local entrepreneurs can come together to sell their products, adding that most of the people in the constituency are farmers and fishermen.

He added that the centre can also become a place for farmers to sell their agricultural produce and for the fishermen to sell their catch.

“Such centre will greatly help to increase the income of the locals and promote Simunjan as the oldest district in Sarawak,” he pointed out.

On electricity supply, Awla said a few villages in the area like Kpg Sungai Jong and Kpg Sedilo have yet to enjoy electricity supply, and hoped that the relevant agency will study the matter seriously.
