ThePeak finds out how a di­verse group of com­pa­nies were drawn into a part­ner­ship based on shar­ing the same pas­sion for good de­sign. It’s not al­ways easy be­ing an in­te­rior de­signer. Just ask Ade­line Lim, Cre­ative Con­sul­tant of MALREKA As­so­ciates Sdn Bhd and a 20year vet­eran of the busi­ness. From her de­scrip­tion, it some­times feels as slip­pery a task as a tightrope walker’s. “One of the things you need to learn quickly is how to say yes or no to a client,” she says, es­pe­cially those who have very set ideas of what they want. “Of course, they only want the best for their houses,” Lim says. “There are, how­ever, times when I need to dis­agree with them be­cause I also care about their homes.”

De­sign-wise, Lim, who is an ar­chi­tect as well, is very much about sim­plic­ity. “I like con­crete floor­ing, big glass, raw steel... nat­u­ral ma­te­rial mainly. Good de­sign is about am­bi­ence too, so space plan­ning or the us­age of the area is very im­por­tant, and you need to work with the land­scape and en­vi­ron­ment so that ev­ery­thing flows prop­erly,” she ex­plains.
