Top fashion talent
MALAYSIAN International Fashion Alliance (mifa) is organising a nationwide prowl for fashion’s finest young talents. Check out the Who’s Next – Designer and Model Search Contest, that’s designed to help discover new talents.
According to mifa’s CEO Syeba Yip, the contest will also equip contestants with real-life skills that will prepare them for the dog-eatdog world of fashion.
“We’re looking for designers who are creative, business-savvy, marketing-oriented and adaptable to today’s fastchanging trends,” says Yip. “As for the models, we’ll be focusing on reallife aspects of the modelling business such as practicalities, groundwork, industry demands and job expectations so that they’ll be well-prepared to cope with the profession.”
Helmed by former beauty queen Deborah Henry and actress-modelproducer Kavita Sidhu respectively, the Who’s Next Designer and Who’s Next Model Search will be aired via online TV on the newly revamped mifa portal.
The Who’s Next Designer was formerly known as The 10 Rising Stars; it is rebranded differently this year. Past winners of the young designer contest such as Jonathan Liang and Wilson Tan have gone on to participate in fashion weeks abroad while Willis Gan now works as a designer for Farah Khan.
This year’s shortlisted contestants will get to learn from industry’s experts such as Datuk Bernard Chandran, who is among the panel of mentors for the Designer Search.
Judges for the preliminary rounds of Who’s Next Designer Search include Bernard Chandran, fashion industry veteran Roslan Wilkinson, Deborah Henry and Maxis’ Abigail Wong.
Andrewsmodels’ founder Andrew Tan and Kavita Sidhu will judge the preliminary round of Who’s Next Model Search.
The final judging round will feature a combined presentation of both designer and model contestants to determine the winners of both competitions. There will be an oral presentation before the actual runway presentation to allow judges to learn more about contestants from both competitions. Finally, the model contestants will don the designs of the designer contestants on a runway show on Nov 3. Judges for the final rounds of both competitions include the Malaysia Official Designers’ Association (Moda) president Gillian Hung, Tan, Kavita and Deborah.
Winner of the Designer Search will walk away with RM100,000 worth of prizes which include support and guidance to launch their own fashion business. Meanwhile, the Model Search winner will take home modelling contracts worth RM100,000 as well as slimming sessions, facial treatments and merchandises.
A total of 10 finalists are currently in the running to win the Who’s Next – Designer and Model Search Contest respectively. –
