Magika re­ceives nods in half of the cat­e­gories of the 23rd Malaysian Film Fes­ti­val – the high­est for any en­try this year.

THE fan­tasy mu­si­cal com­edy Magika star­ring Mawi and Diana Danielle leads the list of nom­i­nees of the 23rd Malaysian Film Fes­ti­val (FFM23), which is un­der­way from to­day till Sun­day.

The film, about two sib­lings who get lost in a mag­i­cal world af­ter their mother’s death, scored a whop­ping 12 nom­i­na­tions out of the 24 cat­e­gories in com­pe­ti­tion. Magika also marks the di­rec­to­rial de­but of Edry Ab­dul Halim (of KRU fame).

Com­ing in a close sec­ond is the horror film San­tau with 11 nom­i­na­tions, fol­lowed by the mu­si­cal ro­man­tic movie Estet with eight nom­i­na­tions.

Nom­i­nees for two ma­jor cat­e­gories, Best Film and Best Di­rec­tor, are, how­ever, not an­nounced yet.

“These cat­e­gories will ei­ther be an­nounced later or on the day of the awards night on Sun­day,” said Fi­nas (Na­tional Film Devel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion) di­rec­tor-gen­eral Mohd Mahyidin Mus­takim at a press con­fer­ence in Shah Alam, Se­lan­gor, last week.

The Awards Night will take place at the Shah Alam Con­ven­tion Cen­tre.

Apart from the 24 cat­e­gories, there will also be an ad­di­tional five spe­cial jury awards.

Nan­cie Foo, the chair­man of en­tries and jury for the Malaysian Film Fes­ti­val, said there was an in­crease in com­pet­ing films this year.

She also noted a new genre in lo­cal films of late.

“Horror and com­edy are still pop­u­lar but this year, we’ve seen the emer­gence of the mu­si­cal genre as well,” she said.

FFM23 opens tonight at the Cen­tre Atrium e@Curve, Mu­tiara Da­mansara, Petaling Jaya, Se­lan­gor, and there will be free screen­ings of films on Oct 22 and 23 at GSC Ala­manda, Putrajaya, as well as in Kuala Lumpur at MBO Galaxy Am­pang and TGV Wangsa Walk.
