Magika receives nods in half of the categories of the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival – the highest for any entry this year.
THE fantasy musical comedy Magika starring Mawi and Diana Danielle leads the list of nominees of the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM23), which is underway from today till Sunday.
The film, about two siblings who get lost in a magical world after their mother’s death, scored a whopping 12 nominations out of the 24 categories in competition. Magika also marks the directorial debut of Edry Abdul Halim (of KRU fame).
Coming in a close second is the horror film Santau with 11 nominations, followed by the musical romantic movie Estet with eight nominations.
Nominees for two major categories, Best Film and Best Director, are, however, not announced yet.
“These categories will either be announced later or on the day of the awards night on Sunday,” said Finas (National Film Development Corporation) director-general Mohd Mahyidin Mustakim at a press conference in Shah Alam, Selangor, last week.
The Awards Night will take place at the Shah Alam Convention Centre.
Apart from the 24 categories, there will also be an additional five special jury awards.
Nancie Foo, the chairman of entries and jury for the Malaysian Film Festival, said there was an increase in competing films this year.
“Last year, we received 26 films; this year, the number went up to 29. Judging by the increase of film productions, we expect an

She also noted a new genre in local films of late.
“Horror and comedy are still popular but this year, we’ve seen the emergence of the musical genre as well,” she said.
