Memories that last a lifetime
DESPITE having travelled extensively to Britain, Holland, France, Norway, Finland, Russia, Poland, Hungry, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, Monaco, Australia, the United States, Canada, Egypt, India, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, SouthEast Asia, South America and South Africa, Tan Beng Theam and Annie Cheah Suan Nee didn’t need to ponder long when asked for their top picks.
Both agree that New Zealand, Switzerland and Austria are beautiful but Tan cites some “special attractions” where he’s left bits of his heart.
“I have fond memories of the Canadian Rockies, Germany’s Rhine Region, the Scottish Highlands, Norwegian Fjords, St Lawrence Waterway, Grand Canyon, Isle of Capri, Rio de Janeiro and the extraordinary Huang Shan in China.
“No photograph in the world can ever do justice to the Blue Grotto in Venice where the water sparkles like diamonds,” he says.
“You hear and read so much about a place and when you visit it, all that geography lesson just comes to life – the multi-dimensional effect on all your senses is such an amazing feeling.
“Truly, we live in such a wonderful world.”
Cities and monuments also intrigue him with the pyramids of Egypt, Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty getting special mention.
“These monumental structures reflect the great creative power of man,” he shares.
Cheah says she always looks out for the culture, people, scenery and history of places they visit.
“Some may consider travelling a waste of money because it is intangible, but I disagree because we have snapshots of our memories – these are very real and tangible.
“I know people who spend a lot on expensive meals but after a while, you forget the taste of the food. With travel, the memories last a lifetime,” Tan adds.
