TWO fa­mil­iar names in the lo­cal mu­sic scene, Azmyl Yunor and Ian Chow, will be re­leas­ing their re­spec­tive al­bums in a joint gig to­day (8.30pm) at The Ac­tors Stu­dio @ Lot 10 in Kuala Lumpur.

Azmyl’s seven-track al­bum H. I.D.U.P. – Hari Ini Di Ukay Per­dana is an ac­com­pa­ny­ing disc to his al­bum Warga re­leased last May. His al­bum fea­tures solo acous­tic ver­sions of some of the songs (in­clud­ing crowd favourites Anak Dara, Makan Gaji, Har­mon­ica and Freo) from his up­com­ing al­bum, Azmyl Yunor & the Si­garettes due next year.

Chow’s al­bum Is­sue # 1 takes on a plethora of so­cial is­sues from child pros­ti­tu­tion to sui­cides to dis­crim­i­na­tion. With 11 tracks loosely fall­ing in the al­ter­na­tive pop/rock genre, the al­bum has three bonus tracks – one which he spe­cially com­posed for his re­cent wed­ding and an­other two that are song remixes from his pre­vi­ous al­bum.

The launch is styled like a live talk show with ac­tor Ashraf Zain and Rosheen as hosts. Singer-song­writer Ariff Akhir makes an ap­pear­ance.

The band, un­der the ba­ton of founder/ mu­sic di­rec­tor Bruce Lee and guest con­duc­tor Mit­suo Mon­ami, per­forms clas­si­cal pieces like The Magic Flute ( Mozart), Air Pathé­tique (Beethoven) and al­most for­got­ten band favourites like In­can­ta­tion And Dance (James Barnes Chance) and Broad­way num­ber 76 Trom­bones ( Mered­ith Wil­son).

In ad­di­tion, Tsun Jin High School Choir per­forms Can­tate Dominum, Chi­nese folk song Ala­muhan and award-win­ning movie Avatar I See You ( James Horner and Simon Fran­glen).

Born in the Sa­hara re­gion of Al­ge­ria, Sundy is a de­scen­dant of a long line of Tuaregs. Af­ter re­lo­cat­ing to Paris in the 1960s, he dis­cov­ered Amer­i­can blues. He is a reg­u­lar per­former in the Chicago blues scene and has toured through the Barcelona Blues Fes­ti­val, Mon­treal Jazz Fes­ti­val, Arezzo Fes­ti­val in Italy and much more.

Sundy is an ac­com­plished com­poser-song­writer and in­ter­prets his pieces in French, English and Tuareg. Al­ready with five al­bums un­der his belt, the rich­ness of his mu­sic runs from a fu­sion of Chicago blues and Ber­ber rhythms to African roots.
