Con­sid­ered a national trea­sure in In­dia, the award-win­ning tabla vir­tu­oso Zakir Hus­sain is one of the world’s most in­flu­en­tial mu­si­cians, renowned for his genre-de­fy­ing col­lab­o­ra­tions. His play­ing is marked by an un­canny in­tu­ition and mas­ter­ful im­pro­vi­sa­tional dex­ter­ity.

The fore­most dis­ci­ple of his fa­ther, the le­gendary Us­tad Al­larakha, Zakir was a child prodigy who be­gan his pro­fes­sional ca­reer at 12 and toured in­ter­na­tion­ally by 18. He was the re­cip­i­ent of many awards, most no­tably the Grammy Awards in 1991 and 2009 for Best World Mu­sic Al­bum for Planet Drum and Global Drum Project.

The Masters of Per­cus­sion, an out­growth of Zakir’s mem­o­rable tours with his fa­ther, has en­joyed suc­cess­ful tours in the West since 1996. Their 2011 tour is joined by Tau­fiq Qureshi (drums and per­cus­sions), Rakesh Chaura­sia ( bansuri – bam­boo flute), Sabir Khan ( sarangi), Navin Sharma ( dho­lak), Ab­bos Kosi­mov ( doyra) and the Meitei Pung Cholom Per­form­ing Troupe (danc­ing drum­mers of Ma­nipur). K.I.V:2: Be­yond Say is a plat­form for chore­og­ra­phers and dancers alike to ex­plore and ex­press their tal­ents and ex­per­i­ment with new ideas. Fea­tur­ing the works of home­grown chore­og­ra­phers – Lex Lak­sh­man Balakr­ish­nan, Fairuz Tauhid, Ez­di­anie Hay­ati Omar, Ak­mal Ayob and Nazri Za­haud­din.
