Considered a national treasure in India, the award-winning tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain is one of the world’s most influential musicians, renowned for his genre-defying collaborations. His playing is marked by an uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity.
The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, Zakir was a child prodigy who began his professional career at 12 and toured internationally by 18. He was the recipient of many awards, most notably the Grammy Awards in 1991 and 2009 for Best World Music Album for Planet Drum and Global Drum Project.
The Masters of Percussion, an outgrowth of Zakir’s memorable tours with his father, has enjoyed successful tours in the West since 1996. Their 2011 tour is joined by Taufiq Qureshi (drums and percussions), Rakesh Chaurasia ( bansuri – bamboo flute), Sabir Khan ( sarangi), Navin Sharma ( dholak), Abbos Kosimov ( doyra) and the Meitei Pung Cholom Performing Troupe (dancing drummers of Manipur).
