THE United Na­tions High Com­mis­sioner For Refugees (UNHCR), in col­lab­o­ra­tion with The Ac­tors Stu­dio, presents Datuk Fari­dah Mer­i­can’s an­nual in­stall­ment of Life Sdn Bhd.

The sev­enth in­stall­ment con­cerns chal­lenges faced by refugees. Hear sto­ries of how refugees flee war, con­flict and hu­man rights abuses in seek­ing safety and liv­ing in Malaysia

Fari­dah launched Life Sdn Bhd in 2004. The beauty of it lies in its stripped down for­mat where ac­tors and non-ac­tors share true sto­ries, on stage, on is­sues that af­fect us.

Fea­tur­ing refugees Ngun Siang, Raine and Shar­i­fah and Miss Malaysia/Uni­verse 2011 and refugee rights ad­vo­cate Deb­o­rah Henry and UNHCR’s Susheela Bala­sun­daram.

Also fea­tur­ing spe­cially comis­sioned songs by home­grown singer­song­writ­ers Ariff Akhir and Ian Chow.

Show runs Oct 26 to Oct 30 (8pm, with a 3pm mati­nee show on Oct 30) at The Ac­tors Stu­dio @ Lot 10, Jalan Sul­tan Is­mail in Kuala Lumpur. Tick­ets are RM33 and RM23 (stu­dents/TAS mem­bers).

The long stand­ing home­grown show­case fea­tures in­die mav­er­ick OJ Law, who has self-re­leased his lat­est out­ing Yes­ter­day Is A Dis­tant Dream, which is a word-of-mouth rev­e­la­tion in the mu­sic scene.

OJ Law’s new al­bum (his third since 2006) fea­tures melo­dra­matic in­die songs like Lovers’ Tiff, Fan­tas­tic Ad­ven­ture (fea­tur­ing Liyana Fizi) and the new sin­gle Yoñlu. Other acts for tonight’s Moon­shine in­clude Silent Scenery, soul­ful singer-song­writer Amir Ja­hari and new­comer out­fit En­ter­prise.

Show­time is 9.30pm. Cover: min­i­mum pur­chase one drink. De­tails at the door. n VIVA Cir­cus in con­junc­tion with Pub­lika, presents the in­au­gu­ral Col­li­sion Arts Asia Fes­ti­val, a three­day fi­esta cre­ated by independent artists for the pub­lic. The event will be held at Pub­lika, Jalan Du­ta­mas 1, So­laris Du­ta­mas in KL to­mor­row till Sun­day.

To­mor­row (7pm), there is the Ul­ti­mate Dance Crew com­pe­ti­tion where some of the coun­try’s most tal­ented dance crews bat­tle it out with their best group dance rou­tines and ac­ro­bat­ics acts.

On Satur­day (6pm), check out Viva Cir­cus Ex­pe­ri­ence – a per­for­mance fus­ing tra­di­tional Asian cul­tural dances with con­tem­po­rary arts such as hip hop, street ac­ro­bat­ics and cir­cus acts.

On Sun­day (7pm), there is the 72 Hour Cre­ation Chal­lenge where artists from dif­fer­ent dis­ci­plines come to­gether and within 72 hours, have to co-cre­ate a 30-minute show. The chal­lenge starts to­day. Pro­ceeds will be do­nated to the Viva Cir­cus Outreach Pro­gramme.

Additional events in­clude pre­sen­ta­tions with key note speak­ers from the multi arts, en­ter­tain­ment and events in­dus­try, multi arts exhibitions, film screen­ings, street per­for­mances and crafts mar­ket.
