Bags for all seasons
this month, we take a look at the latest bags for both men and women, and how they’ve become lifestyle choices that reflect our individual tastes and personalities.
OROTON is a leading luxury brand from Australia, synonymous with fine leathers and superior craftsmanship, since 1938.
It made elegant gold compact cases a fashion statement in the 50s and brought the world its signature metallic mesh bags in the 70s.
With a name derived from the Latin words “oro” and “ton”, which literally translates as “a tonne of gold” combined, the Sydney-born brand is all about the glitter. Its latest Autumn/Winter 2011 collections – the Royal Visit and Caroline On The Left Bank – gleam with opulence and timeless appeal.
Oroton’s creative director Ana Maria Escobar shares that clean lines and classic shapes mark the Royal Visit collection.
“I didn’t do it with the royal family in mind,” she says with a laugh. “I was thinking more about the everyday woman who is expecting a ‘royal’ visit – like when your mother-in-law comes to town and you want everything to be perfect without overdoing it, or when you go on a date and want to look your best without trying too hard.”
This season, its collection of clutches, totes, hobos, mini and satchel bags come to life in marshmallow pastels, cloud cream, grasshopper khaki, nutmeg and bold animal print.
Escobar adds that this Autumn’s star, the Luca collection, makes the perfect day-time accessory. It features linen that is worked back with soft nappa leather. The Luca satchel, the collection’s central piece, boasts sophistication and functionality with its polished, three-tone design. The structured clutches are evocative of ladylike elegance.
The Serene collection, on the other hand, brims with demure chic. Made from ultra-soft pebble grain leather, the stylish look is off- AFTER 70 years, Coach is still coming up with great New Yorkinspired bags. For its anniversary, there are a few bags to look out for − the Madison Quilted Chevron Lindsey, Madison Caroline, Bleeker Ticking Stripe Courier bag, Tote and Weekend bag.
The Fall 2011 collections are also available in stores now, with actress Gwyneth Paltrow fronting the campaign.
The new Chelsea Collection – classic, refined and feminine – is seen with the leather-bound edges of early Coach styles but updated with a new, elongated closure, combining the classic Coach turnlock with the lozenge shape of the original Coach logo.
The Chelsea Dowel Flap updates the classic dowel designs from 20 years ago, while the Chelsea Suede Pocket Flap reinterprets a simple, rectangular silhouette in velvety suede. Small scale versions are available.
The Madison collection offers an updated version of last year’s instant classic Sophia Satchel as well as the Pleated Sophia. There’s also the smaller-scaled Sequin Mini and Sequin Ocelot Mini day-to-evening bags in dif- set with soft tassels and integrated chain and leather strap. For a night out, there is the glitzy Opera minibag and the Icon Crystals clutch, a minaudiere of crystals in five eyecatching jewel hues.
Feminine detailing resonates throughout, which includes elaborate statement jewellery, refined knits and ballet flats.
Oroton continues its autumnal Royal Affair with its regal Winter collection, Caroline On The Left Bank. Escobar says it was inspired by the timeless beauty of Princess Caroline of Monaco, whom she met during a recent trip to Paris.
“I had a special moment while walking along the left bank of the Seine when I noticed the most beautiful woman trying on a leopard dress in a vintage shop. She had an entourage around her and that was when I realised it was Princess Caroline. She was just so effortlessly elegant in her beautiful little dress that it inspired me to create a collection to capture that precise moment, of that bold, leopard print dress she had on and how special a piece can make you feel.”
The range is all about special moments, she elaborates. “It’s about waiting for that someone special, having a party you’ll never forget n Prices start from RM150. Available at Coach stores in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, KLIA and Penang. or having a special place to go to – every bag is designed for that special moment in time.”
It plays with print and texture, featuring nylon, pony-skin and glossy Italian resin underpinned by classic feminine lines with tinges of nostalgia.
“Every Oroton collection has a little bit of nostalgia to it. It is a 73-year-old brand, after all. I think it brings us back to the very core of what the brand is about,” she adds.
The range isn’t short on romance, either, with calm neutrals like rose pink, tan and caviar as the highlight of the collection. Detailed hardware strengthens the range in gladiatorial bronzes, gunmetal and gold.
“We are inspired by trends but we don’t necessarily try to follow them. For instance, dusky pink and grasshopper green are in this season, and we played that up in our collection, but the shapes and hardware pieces of our designs are still distinctively Oroton. We are known for our quality and soft leathers as well as our signature mesh and it’s bicycle packs and bags for the man-on-the-go.
There’s the top of the line Crosby collection added to the new Bleecker Legacy Collection that combines archival elements with modern design.
The lightweight Rivington available in quilted or smooth Italian leather, is inspired by vintage skiwear. The all new Bowery Collection, available in rugged leather or lightweight nylon with the texture of ballistic fabric, is trimmed with ultra-premium Havana leather. –S.S.Yoga all still there.”
She adds that the brand is popular across generations. “It’s a timeless brand. In Australia, we have those aged 15 to 50 years old who simply love their Oroton bags. It’s really hard for me to describe the ideal Oroton woman as she spans the generations and varied personalities.”
Escobar, who became the brand’s creative director in 2008, says she draws inspiration from the past.
“I look into the past to bring the brand into the future, rather than look into the future and think of what I’m going to do next. I try to keep a balance between the brand’s heritage and seasonal trends,” she concludes. –FionaHo n Oroton is available at Suria KLCC and the Gardens, Kuala Lumpur.
