Teenage pop star greyson Chance will be performing as a special guest at the anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 2011 awards show at Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on nov 12.

The fresh-faced, 14-year-old american, who recently released his debut album Hold On ‘Til The Night, will duet with newcomer singer-songwriter najwa Latif, 16, on her song Cinta Muka Buku ( Facebook Love).

In a media conference last week, AIM chairman Rosmin Hashim said: “Both artistes made their name on Youtube and this performance will speak to a whole generation of music lovers who discover music online rather than on TV or radio.”

Chance became popular when a video of him covering Lady gaga’s Paparazzi on piano and vocals was posted on Youtube last year.

The boy from Wichita Falls, Texas, was noticed by TV host ellen Degeneres, who invited him to perform on her show, making the popularity of his video skyrocket, garnering over 40 million hits on the video-sharing website.

“Chance will share the stage with najwa, who also began her career on Youtube,” added Rosmin.

Chance’s appearance on AIM is a significant one, as there have been no foreign guest performers on the show since 1999.

The last foreign artiste to perform at AIM was The Scorpions from germany. Prior to that, US R&B group all For One performed at AIM in 1996 while the soulful Mick Hucknall (from Simply Red) was a live guest in 1997.

Besides Chance performing at AIM, new hosts for the show have also been announced.

TV personality ac Mizal and comedian Zizan Razak will host the 18th edition of AIM.

Rosmin said they were looking for a change of presenters after such a long time, as afdlin Shauki was the main host of AIM from 1999 to 2010, except when he took a break in 2004.

“We decided on ac Mizal and Zizan Razak because they are famous and funny. It’s not a conscious decision for AIM to address a rural audience. It’s a decision based purely on popularity,” he said.

Performers for AIM 2011 include Yuna, Jaclyn Victor and Shila amzah. Old school rockers exist and Slam, and rock queen ella, will also be kicking it live onstage. among the presenters are M. nasir, Zainal abidin, Search and Ziana Zain.

Where nominations are concerned, music legend Datuk Sheila Majid is still a big deal with four nominations, including album of The Year ( The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Celebrates 25 Years Of Sheila Majid).

another AIM favourite is Us-based singer-songwriter Yuna, who is up for Best Vocal Performance In a Song (for Penakut and Gelora Cinta) Best Pop Song ( Penakut) and Best album Cover ( Decorate).

Pop rock artiste aizat amdan is also a major contender with six AIM nominations (for his album Urusan Aizat Amdan), including Best Pop Song, Best engineered album and a crossover opportunity with Years From Now in the Best english Song category.

The independent singer-songwriter scene also has Reza Salleh in the AIM spotlight. Reza has five nominations for his debut album Realize. He has landed the Best new artiste, Best Male Vocalist, Best engineered album, and two Best english Song nominations.

apart from Reza (two nominations) and aizat (one nomination) in the Best english Song category, Us-based newcomer soul singer najwa Mahiaddin is also a keen favourite with two nominations in that particular category (her songs Innocent Soul and Got To Go).

najwa, who released her debut album, Innocent Soul, in March this year, is also nominated in the Best new artiste and Best Female Vocalist categories.
