IN fashion, old is gold. Just ask any style enthusiast, and he or she will probably tell you that what’s hot back then is now cool again. This cyclical rise and fall of trends is hallmark of an industry that just loves paying homage to its past.
With regard to that, retro eyewear has slowly, but surely, made a comeback. Cateye silhouettes, thick plastic frames and tortoiseshell patterns – these are the elements seen frequently incorporated into current eyewear designs.
One new brand, ModernRetroVintage blends retro designs with a modern feel. Its debut collection of 10 different sunglasses serves up a feel of a gilded age gone by, but with design accents more attuned to current times.
Gradient amber lenses duly elevated by metallic strips straddle the rim, or a double play of an acetate rim with a metal temple elongates into thick temple tips. These all add a certain sense of youthfulness.
The ModernRetroVintage’s tagline reads: “Inspired by the classics. Styled for the contemporary. Crafted for the perfect fit.”
The build of ModernRetroVintage’s eyewear fits Asians perfectly. A higher, narrower bridge, a wider countenance, and elevated cheekbone rims – the brand has made these seamless tweaks that serve to frame Asian features to its optimum.
All of ModernRetroVintage’s sunglasses are crafted in Italy. They are available in three to four editions for each model, all of them complemented by quality Zeiss lenses.
As a special touch, each model is limited to a production of 50 pieces. As such, a pair of ModernRetroVintage sunglasses is said to equal a status of unparalleled style and exclusivity.
Consider the very beautiful Tiger Eyes, MRV005 model. It is what the brand aptly describes as “the playful imitation of a striped beast, echoed in the faint whiff of cat-eyed frames”.
Another, the Jet Pack, MRV008, is “a striped incarnation design” of matte black and earthy brown variations. Metal rivets studded on the rim complement its luminous gold mirror lenses, and this allows for the model’s bold aesthetic to flourish.
The launch of ModernRetroVintage in Kuala Lumpur saw personalities the likes of Ning Baizura, Shir Chong, Frederick Lee and Danny Lim in attendance. There, they posed with creative illustrations of themselves, showcasing the models that fit them best. – Bervin Cheong
