A versatile career in biotech
tHE acceptance of biotechnology is increasing as countries become convinced of its benefits towards agricultural, health care, environmental and economic levels.
One clear indication that the world is advancing towards biotechnology is the rate at which global interest has been increasing. A significant impact is the social benefit achieved via alleviation of poverty leading to more affordable food, health care and a better environment.
Biotechnology is basically using living organisms to improve its traits or to value add by manipulating or modifying its DNA. The products of this living organism is utilised to solve the problem associated with health care, agricultural or industrial areas.
One of the challenges in the study of biotechnology is piecing together complex information from different scientific disciplines. Thus, it is an exhaustive field that relies on contributions from many areas of science and computation, including disciplines such as philosophy, ethics ( halal concept) and economics.
Manipal International University (MIU) has introduced a B.Sc (Hons) Biotechnology programme to enhance graduates’ versatility for a career in the biotechnological sectors.
This programme at MIU involves an introduction to basic sciences and its extension to three main areas of biotechnology, namely plant, animal and microbial biotechnology.

To protect one’s inventions, they also address Intellectual Property Rights, patents as well as aspects of ethical, regulatory system (legal) and social implications of biotechnology. This programme is also designed to inculcate entrepreneurship development in biotechnology.
A graduate with a Biotechnology qualification will be versatile in research and development in public and private research institutes as research officers under the supervision of established and experienced scientist.
They can also choose to take up positions as graduate assistants at universities to pursue their postgraduate studies.
In the education sector, they can be employed as graduate teachers for secondary education.
Biotech companies engaged in manufacturing require graduates in biotechnology as manufacturing associates in a supervisory and management level.
They have the opportunity to become biotech product specialists in marketing and selling a variety of biotechnological products ranging from biotech instruments to reagents related to genomics or proteomics. They can also be engaged in the field of bioinformatics and contribute towards drafting biotech patent applications under the supervision of a patent lawyer.
If we focus our attention on biodiversity, we could harness the power of biotechnology to further enhance biodiversity.
Such applications would allow changes and improvements in living organisms to provide desirable products for mankind.
