Relief for joint pain and osteoarthritis

The Star Malaysia - Star2 - - STAR SPECIAL -

nEW clinical trial data published recently in The Journal of Rheumatology showed that Flexiseq gel was effective in managing the pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) and was again found to have a much stronger safety profile than other treatments.

This is the latest high-profile publication after it won the German Pharmacy Industry award for innovation in January this year.

Dr Matthias Rother, the publication’s lead author, says, “This is an important study that confirms the safety and efficacy of Flexiseq for treatment of the chronic pain and stiffness that trouble many patients with OA.

“The effect seen is comparable to a comparative study using the same design, which demonstrated that Flexiseq has equivalent efficacy to the widely used oral NSAID, celecoxib.”

The findings offer hope to OA patients, particularly those at risk from the common gastrointestinal and cardiovascular side effects associated with NSAIDs, such as celecoxib and diclofenac (which has been the subject of further health warnings from the EMA in July).

Prof Conaghan, co-author of the paper, says that OA is a widespread and chronic disease that causes pain and loss of function, which adversely affects patients’ lives.

“Many shouldn’t take or can’t tolerate current oral analgesics because of side effects. This study provides further insight into the efficacy of this treatment that has demonstrated excellent safety and tolerability. These studies are among several which consistently demonstrate the benefits of this drug-free gel.”

Farmasia Sdn Bhd, the distributors of Flexiseq in Malaysia, recently held a talk for medical practitioners given by Dr Matthias. Dr Matthias was happy with the results in some patients after using Flexiseq.

“One patient has been using Flexiseq for one year and she now no longer requires oral painkillers. At age 70, this truly is a huge benefit for her,” he says.

Another patient who has been using Flexiseq for her knee pain says she is now able to do so many things than before, like kneeling and climbing steps with ease. She had tried various pills and supplements but was not able to get adequate pain relief. She now maintains a once-a-day application.

In Malaysia, thousands of patients have used Flexiseq, gaining a new lease of mobility and freedom from pain.

Awarded “Innovation of 2013” in Germany by the Federal Association of German Pharmacists, Flexiseq is engineered to treat OA via a physical mode of action.

It employs Sequessome Technology, an important reinforcement of the efficacy and safety profile of Flexiseq.

There is great interest from the medical community and huge demand from patients, with many regarding it as a “wonder gel”.

Flexiseq is available in Germany, Austria, Ireland and Malaysia.

About Sequessome Technology

Sequessome Technology utilises nanostructures called Sequessome vesicles that cross the skin barrier after topical application and migrate through various tissues to reach the target joint. Once inside, Sequessome vesicles accumulate on the damaged cartilage forming a lubricating layer.

This targeted, physical mode of action means there are no drug-todrug interactions as it is not a drug and can be used safely by patients taking a variety of medications for other conditions.

Flexiseq is a welcome option for patients considered “at risk” from the common side effects associated with NSAIDs, for example those with high blood pressure and/or gastric disorders. With this, patients can continue to maintain their pain relief by using Flexiseq on a longterm basis and adjust their application regime to suit their individual requirements by reducing the frequency of application from the initial twice-a-day regime.
