Shah Alam was of­fi­cially made the cap­i­tal of Se­lan­gor in De­cem­ber 1978 and was up­graded to a city in 2000.

Shah Alam also has sev­eral in­sti­tu­tions of higher learn­ing, which in­clude Univer­siti Te­knologi Mara, Univer­siti In­dus­try Se­lan­gor and Man­age­ment and Sci­ence Univer­sity.

The Sultan Salahud­din Ab­dul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam is pop­u­larly known as the Blue Mosque due to its blue dome.
