MALAYSIA is see­ing an in­creas­ing de­mand in the field of Med­i­cal Lab Tech­nol­ogy (MLT). Ca­reer op­por­tu­ni­ties await grad­u­ates in pub­lic and pri­vate hos­pi­tals, treat­ment cen­tres, lab­o­ra­to­ries and clin­ics.

Al­though they do not of­ten get in­volved with pa­tients, med­i­cal lab­o­ra­tory tech­nol­o­gists play a cru­cial role in the process of pro­vid­ing per­sonal care. They are re­spon­si­ble for iden­ti­fy­ing and treat­ing ill­ness.

Diploma in Med­i­cal Lab­o­ra­tory Tech­nol­ogy (DTMP) is de­signed to make room for stu­dents who want to ven­ture into a ca­reer in med­i­cal cen­tres, clin­ics, re­search and pub­lic health lab­o­ra­to­ries.

MLT tasks in­clude both the­ory and prac­ti­cal ex­po­sure. The pro­gramme is a com­pre­hen­sive ed­u­ca­tional ex­pe­ri­ence with train­ing and ed­u­ca­tion at all lev­els of lab­o­ra­tory medicine, in­clud­ing Hema­tol­ogy, Mi­cro­bi­ol­ogy, Par­a­sitol­ogy, Trans­fu­sion Medicine, Cy­tol­ogy, Histo Tech­nol­ogy and Chem­i­cal Pathol­ogy.

The three-year pro­gramme aims to pro­duce med­i­cal lab­o­ra­tory tech­nol­o­gists com­pe­tent in line with the mis­sion to pro­duce grad­u­ates who are ca­pa­ble and meet the hu­man re­source needs of the coun­try.

Med­i­cal lab­o­ra­tory tech­nol­o­gists use their knowl­edge to per­form tests that help physi­cians di­ag­nose, mon­i­tor and treat disease, iden­tify the source of in­fec­tion, chem­i­cal anal­y­sis, and they can de­ter­mine the pa­tient’s blood type and ready for trans­fu­sion.

Med­i­cal lab­o­ra­tory tech­nol­o­gists pro­vide nu­mer­ous di­ag­nos­tic and ther­a­peu­tic in­for­ma­tion which is in­valu­able to the health care team. Through this pro­gramme, stu­dents will build soft skills and crit­i­cal think­ing re­quired for a suc­cess­ful med­i­cal lab­o­ra­tory tech­nol­o­gist.
