UNITAR holds maiden convocation
UNITAR International University conferred 22 Master and Diploma awards at its maiden convocation held in Petaling Jaya recently.
The convocation saw the proclamation of the university’s first chancellor, Datuk Mohamed Nizam Tun Abdul Razak.
A corporate leader, Mohamed Nizam is currently chairman, director and member of the audit committee of several major private and public-listed companies in Malaysia and Singapore, including Mamee-Double Decker (M) Bhd (food), Yeo Hiap Seng Ltd (food), Asia Experience Sdn Bhd (tourism), Healthscan Sdn Bhd (healthcare), Wah Seong Group of Companies (oil and gas) and Petra Energy Bhd (oil and gas).
In May, he was appointed regional adviser to the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS).
UNITAR also awarded its first honorary doctorate to Defence Force chief General Tan Sri Datuk Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin in recognition of his work to improve the education of Defence Ministry (Mindef) officers through the Knowledge Force programme (K-Force) with UNITAR.
Currently, around 1,500 Mindef officers are pursuing UNITAR programmes in 11 locations across Malaysia.
Mohamed Nizam said, “The appointment is not only a great honour for me but also one of great personal and emotional significance.
“I pledge to do my best as the UNITAR chancellor in upholding the good name of the university and to take this educational institution to even greater heights, regionally and internationally”.
Meanwhile, UNITAR vicechancellor Prof Dr Abdul Razak Habib congratulated the students.
He said, “The whole university community will work productively and proactively towards making Unitar International University a distinguished institution of higher learning which will contribute to development, education, economic and social engagements at our new campus in Kelana Jaya.
“Our recent achievement is the establishment of our 11th regional centre in Malaysia, which is located in Bandar Tun Razak, Jengka. This represents our commitment to our mission to widen access to learning.”
