THE Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has collaborated with TalentCorp Malaysia and Sunway-TES, as well as training companies BDO Malaysia, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, PwC and the Sunway Group, to establish the ICAEW Regional Centre of Excellence.

ICAEW chief executive Michael Izza said, “We look forward to establishing an education hub here in Malaysia, where students from the region can train to the same high standards as their predecessors did in the United Kingdom, and become well-respected business leaders.”

The centre offers the highly reputable ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) qualification, giving aspiring business and financial leaders a route to international recognition and career advancement.

Malaysia leading the way

With a memorandum of understanding (MoU) formalising the partnership, the centre aims to promote excellence in accounting training for Malaysia and the region.

Sunway Group Education and Healthcare Division chief executive officer Lee Weng Keng said, “Malaysia is a great place to become a regional centre of excellence for education, which in turn will be the best possible support as we strive to become a high-income nation by 2020.

“As a leading institution and education provider in professional accountancy, we are pleased to be part of this strategic partnership with both TalentCorp and ICAEW to help raise the bar of accounting quality in Malaysia.”

This is the first such public-private partnership in the region and supports the government’s aim of establishing Malaysia as an education hub for the Asean countries.

A centre of excellence

A pilot programme will be carried out for promising students of the region for the chance to study for ICAEW’s internationally recognised ACA qualification in Malaysia.

They will undergo the required training with its collaborative partners. Other accounting firms, banks and businesses are also expected to participate as the programme matures.

TalentCorp chief executive officer Johan Mahmood Merican said, “Partnering with both a prestigious academic institution and world-leading professional body will ensure that we are able to tap into an elite group of individuals who want to work in Malaysia, and that they will have the qualifications needed to contribute to our economic transformation.”

ICAEW is a global leading professional membership organisation that promotes, develops and supports more than 140,000 chartered accountants worldwide.

As leaders in accountancy, finance and business, its members have the knowledge, skills and commitment to maintain the highest professional standards and integrity. Together it contributes to the success of individuals, organisations, communities and economies around the world.
