INSPIRING Lives, Widening Horizons,” the tagline of BERJAYA University College of Hospitality (BERJAYA UCH), aptly describes one of the learning methodologies that engage students.

“Competitions provide the platform for students to explore their boundaries and expand their horizons while showcasing their skills to the public. These provide a myriad of opportunities for students to demonstrate their hidden talents which may lead to achieving greater things in life.

“It makes students interact with each other. The pace at which the students are learning the material has quickened dramatically. The results are not simply noticeable, but dramatic. Even without much changes to the curriculum, students are moving faster through the learning process when they get hands-on.

Competitions also represent an unconventional but effective way of securing internships, scholarships, jobs and exposure to real industries,” said BERJAYA UCH School of Hospitality head Najmi Abdullah.

Two clear examples are Lim Daw Son and Chong Hui Lin, students from the School of Hospitality at BERJAYA UCH.

Lim, who has bagged two gold medals for mocktail-making in the MONIN Cup 2013 and Culinaire Malaysia 2013, shared his thoughts.

“Mixology is one of the things I am passionate about. I discovered an inner talent in mixing drinks when I took up Beverage Studies. Since then, I try to get involved in every bartending competition because I want to show my creativity through the drinks I create.

“Participating in competition challenged me to my limits and pushed me further to achieve greater levels. I always learn from mistakes and constantly remind myself to do better next time.

“Thanks to my lecturers who are always guiding us, I realise things that I need to improve at the end of the day. Besides that, I learn to take responsibilities on what I do and manage my time better.

“To sum up, I love every single minute of drink mixology, I also appreciate every single opportunity that my lecturers gave me, it was priceless and I’ve gained valuable experiences through each competition,” said Lim.

Chong, who recently won the gold medal and “Best of the Best for Table Setting” title in Culinaire Malaysia 2013, was overjoyed with her achievement.

“During my internship at a resort on Langkawi island, my colleague urged me to join this competition. I approached one of the lecturers and I am glad that I was given the opportunity to participate.”

“During my preparation for the competition, I faced difficul- ties looking for suitable materials for my table setting such as the utensils, chinaware, glassware and menu. Moreover, we had limited time to source for items that matched the theme.

Thanks to the help from my lecturer and teammates, I managed to overcome the problems. From the first step of the competition preparation till the actual date, I put my best foot forward. Since then, I realised that whatever I do, I will do my very best and not give up easily,” she said.

BERJAYA UCH chief operating officer Mae Ho said, “Competitions serve as a platform for our students to demonstrate their skills, while challenging their innovative spirit.

“We believe that by sending our students to competitions, it gives exposure and this experience helps them to stand out in the crowd and be competitive in a proactive way.

It empowers them to develop the mental flexibility to think independently, discover what inspires them and gives them fulfilment to overcome the inner barriers that hold them back.

“The BERJAYA Immersion Methodology – our unique teaching principle where students learn by doing – transform the way our students think and give them the confidence to display their skills in public.”

BERJAYA UCH is arguably Malaysia’s premier university college in the fields of Hospitality, Culinary Arts, Tourism and Event Management, situated in the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur.

It also offers courses in Business and Liberal Arts.
