The Star Malaysia - Star2 - - HOME -

Barisan Nasional won 133 parliamentary seats at the 13th general election to record a slightly reduced performance compared to 2008, with the opposition coalition winning 89 seats. Barisan managed to wrest Kedah from Pakatan Rakyat and retained Perak with a slim three-seat majority but failed to regain Selangor, Penang and Kelantan. There were 79 independents contesting parliamentary seats and 190 contesting state seats, making GE13 as the polls with the most number of independents. GE13 was also the first time that indelible ink was used to mark the finger of voters to prevent electoral fraud.
