Ar­gentina’s Jorge Ber­goglio was elected the 266th pope of the Ro­man Catholic Church on March 13 at the Vat­i­can and is now known as Pope Fran­cis. The first Pope from the Amer­i­cas and the first out­side Europe in over a thou­sand years, he was cho­sen by Time mag­a­zine as its Man of the Year. Pope Fran­cis suc­ceeded Pope Bene­dict XVI who, on Feb 11, be­came the first pon­tiff to re­sign since the Mid­dle Ages, say­ing he no longer had the “strength of mind and body” to carry on in a fast-chang­ing world.
