The Star Malaysia - Star2 - - SPORTS -

Not everything this year has been a joy as Malaysia lost two of its most iconic athletes — (from left) bearded hurdler Ishtiaq Mubarak and ponytailed hockey player Chua Boon Huat and young basketballer Jacky Ng Kiat Kee. Three-time Olympian Ishtiaq who represented Malaysia at the Games in Mexico City (1968), Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976) — making the semi finals that year — was one of the most colourful sporting characters the country has every produced. He passed away on Aug 9. He was 65. Equally an effervescent character, 33year-old Boon Huat, one of the longest serving players in the national team, passed away on Aug 1 when his Proton Perdana collided with a water tanker that was watering plants along the LDP near the Kelana Jaya LRT station. Cager Jacky, 25, passed away in China on July 28 after a heart attack.
