Quoting Alexander the great, Sunway College Victoria university (Vu) valedictorian nico Fernando said: “i’m indebted to my father for living but to my teacher for living well,” as he expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his family and lecturers at the Vu Malaysia graduation Ceremony 2014.
in his valedictory speech, the 22-year-old who is from Baturaja, Sumatra, reminded his fellow graduates to remain humble and urged them never to forget the bridges they had crossed, the bonds they had shared and the memories of their time together in Vu, and to look forward, because “the best is yet to be”.
on why he chose Sunway’s Victoria university (Vu) Bachelor of Business programme, nico said: “it does not focus only on theory, but also practical, which i feel is crucial to prepare me for working life. i also received a scholarship to pursue my threeyear programme.”
nico, who graduated with a degree in Accounting/Banking and Finance added: “My time in Vu has played a very important role in my pursuit of success.
“the lecturers and mentors are dedicated. they were always willing to help and guide me, even after their working hours. they motivated me to stretch myself beyond my normal capacity and helped me realise my potential.”
After emerging first runner-up in last year’s Maybank go Ahead Challenge 2013, nico is currently enrolled in the two-year global Maybank Apprentice Programme.

the three-year programme combines academic and practical learning experience, incorporating a Business Learning Experience Project that comprises three Professional Development units of study, which utilises an interactive team-based approach to learning and teaching.

Every semester, Vu Australia academic staff visit, teach and provide academic counselling.
Students are encouraged to undertake through internships and their placements are facilitated by Sunway.
Second-year and third-year students are normally placed in the “Big Four” accounting firms and other corporations to get internship experience.
