Slow down the process of greying hair
HAVE you ever wondered why hair turns grey or premature greying happens?
Grey hair is also known as silver or white hair. Basically, there are two parts to hair – hair shaft and hair root. The hair shaft is the part where the hair emerges from the skin and the initial part is colourless; hair root is enclosed within a hair follicle.
At the base of hair root is the dermal papilla that exchanges oxygen, nutrients and waste products between the capillaries and the hair follicles. The hair root consists of germinative cells and melanocytes.
Germinative cells produce new cells that give rise to hair fibre; melanocytes produce a type of pigment known as melanin which has two types namely eumelanin (brownish black) and phaemelanin (reddish yellow).
These two types of pigments will blend together to give a wide range of colours to the hair. Their quality, quantity and distribution in the hair will further decide the colour of the hair. Hence, when the melanocyte is affected, it will directly affect the melanin in the hair.
Many factors can affect the melanocyte – genetics, insufficient nutrient supply to the hair follicles, stress, ageing or medical conditions.
A reduction in melanin production will have an impact on the hair colour.
Genetics can lead to premature greying and this is the most challenging factor to tackle followed by ageing.
In the process of ageing, hair greying will eventually occur. It is only a matter of time but by leading a healthy lifestyle and proper hair care, the onset can be delayed.
The grey hair issue can be overcome by ensuring healthy eating habits, proper sleeping patterns as well as a change in lifestyle.
The best solution to managing stress is to identify the stressor. Then, come up with an ideal solution to minimise or fully resolve the matter.
Fortunately, the majority of factors can be resolved. Those who are experiencing grey hair need not lose hope. There is still a chance of regaining youthful black hair.
