Catching up with the alumni
SUNWAY TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence ( Sunway TES CAE) held its inaugural Alumni Catch Up for graduates and affiliates of professional accounting programmes, namely ACCA ( Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), CAT ( Certified Accounting Technician), CFAB ( Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business), ICAEW ( Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) and MICPA ( The Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants).
Organised by the Sunway TES Accountancy Graduates Club ( SAGC), the event gathered more than 30 alumni at Sunway University’s Art Gallery and included various activities such as networking sessions, campus tours and a special performance.
Teo Ee Sing, executive director of Sunway College, warmly greeted the alumni by saying, “Welcome back. We are glad to see you back here as we hope to stay in touch with you and explore the possibilities of you contributing to Sunway College. You are all welcome to come back to teach and share your industry knowledge and success with our students.”
Stephen Lee How Hwang, assistant manager of Sunway Group’s internal audit, was one of the best examples of those who have contributed to their alma mater.
Lee left Sunway TES in 2007 with CAT and ACCA qualifications but returned from time to time for the Sunway Mentoring Programme.
This programme provides opportunities for current Sunway College students to learn from their mentors, who are also Sunway alumni.
The Student Services Department Alumni Office pairs each student with a member of the alumni.
The mentor provides academic guidance, industry insights, career advice and assists in the personal development of his or her mentee.
Lee also introduced the International Enterprise Challenge competition to Sunway TES, which is jointly organised by Sunway TES, Premier League, Premier Skills and the British Council.
The competition involved Sunway TES CAE student teams coming up with business plans that involved figuring out how a local professional football club could increase its fan base and attract more live football match audience in stadiums.
The International Enterprise Challenge aims to engage, inspire and unlock the potential of Sunway TES CAE accounting students by developing their business and enterprising skills through examples drawn from the commercial football sector.
In the second running of the competition, three teams from Sunway TES emerged as national champions and qualified for the international level.
Wong James Jack, who completed his CAT and ACCA in 2013, is a bank credit controller at one of the leading local investment banks.
When asked about the difference he saw in Sunway TES, he said, “The institution is definitely expanding and I envy the students here as they get to enjoy the new facilities such as the FIFA- certified football field that was not available during my time here.”
The event also enabled the alumni to catch up with their lecturers. More than half of the alumni who attended the event were once taught by Kiran Seth.
Being a lecturer with Sunway TES for more than 12 years, Kiran is proud to have touched the lives of thousands of accounting students.
She recently became a Sunway TES alumna upon completing the Certified Internal Auditor ( CIA) programme.
“I enjoy imparting knowledge and experience to students. Taking the CIA programme has definitely kept me on my toes as it fills my teaching gaps and enables my teaching to be up to date,” she said.
The event was brought up a notch with a surprise stand- up comedy performance by alumna Juliana Heng Hui Jing.
“My day job is an executive at a Malaysian property investment company, but by night I am a stand- up comedian,” said Heng, who graduated from Sunway TES in 2011 with CAT and ACCA qualifications.
The Alumni Catch Up has gotten off to a good start for the SAGC. Melissa Tan Hui Ying, president of SAGC, is hopeful to connect with more Sunway TES alumni via various big- and small- scale activities.
