Innovative pathway

The Star Malaysia - Star2 - - EDUCATION & FURTHER STUDIES FAIR -

A HIGHLY reputable higher learning institution established since 1969, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College ( TAR UC) is known for excellent education, having successfully produced many prominent national leaders, industry captains, successful entrepreneurs and professionals.

In its efforts to ensure the programmes offered are relevant to the needs of the marketplace, TAR UC continuously reviews and innovates its academic offering.

With that in mind, TAR UC has established collaboration with three British universities to offer Dual Award programmes that will pave the way towards obtaining two bachelor’s degrees.

This unique collaboration was initiated following the evolving trend in the employment market where global mobility and workplace diversity are increasingly becoming commonplace. This is particularly prevalent in multinational corporations as well as many Malaysian companies expanding overseas.

Apart from possessing a globally recognised qualification, employers are emphasising more on having a global mindset as well as cultural savvy from employees.

TAR UC’s Dual Award is carefully designed to meet the new demands to give students the competitive edge when they join the workforce. As implied by the name, the Dual Award will confer students two bachelor’s degrees upon successful completion of the programmes with such arrangement entirely in Malaysia. This means students will receive one Bachelor’s degree from TAR UC and another from the collaborating overseas partner university.

The three British universities that collaborate with TAR UC on the Dual Award are Coventry University, Sheffield Hallam University and University of Salford. Each has entered into the strategic partnership in distinctive areas of studies.

Coventry University focuses mainly on finance and management disciplines. The partnership with University of Salford, having its campus at MediaCityUK with a world- class creative community, focuses in the areas of mass communication and creative art while Sheffield Hallam University has a more diverse range of concentrations.

One salient feature of TAR UC’s Dual Award arrangement is the option to either undertake the Dual Award programmes entirely in Malaysia or opt for study abroad experience, spending one semester in the collaborating partner university’s campus in the United Kingdom to experience learning in an intercultural environment that is diverse and be exposed to global trends.

On top of this, students will also be able to develop global perspectives, which will be an asset in their careers.

The above two options are applicable to Coventry University and the University of Salford except Sheffield Hallam University where study abroad is mandatory.

Since the beginning of 2015, many TAR UC students have gone to the UK for the one semester study abroad. Among them is Chan Yee Chia, a Bachelor of Business Administration ( Hons) student, who has successfully completed four subjects in Coventry University. She attributed this achievement to the dedicated lecturers and university staff who were of great help to her.

Another student reaping the benefits of the Dual Award collaboration is Yap Shir Li, a Bachelor of Corporate Administration ( Hons) student, who studied in Sheffield Hallam University for a semester. Yap felt that with the current high volatility in the currency exchange rate, TAR UC Dual Award’s arrangement came as a compelling bonus for her who yearned to experience studying overseas.

Yap said, “Spending one semester in Sheffield Hallam University has taught me to be independent and now, I am more confident in adapting to the different environment in a foreign country. Through my communication with the lecturers, staff and students from other nationalities, my interpersonal skill has improved tremendously, which will be an asset for me. I am glad that I enrolled for TAR UC’s Dual Award Programme.”
