UMW Toyota Motor has introduced the stylish seven- seater Sienta multi- purpose vehicle ( MPV) in two variants with prices starting from RM92,900.

The Sienta arrives in completely built- up form directly from Toyota’s assembly facility in Indonesia and is priced on- the- road with GST and insurance at RM92,900 for the entry- level 1.5G and RM99,900 for the 1.5V range- topper.

It comes with a five- year warranty with unlimited mileage and six colour choices of Orange Metallic, Super White II, Silver Metallic, Grey Metallic, Attitude Black Mica and Quartz Brown Metallic.

According to Toyota Motor Corp Sienta project chief engineer Hiroshi Kayukawa, the Sienta, which he says competes against the Honda Freed, is based on a modified Vios platform.

The Sienta’s ground- clearance was adjusted from its original Japanese domestic market specifications to 20mm higher at 180mm to help it clear Malaysian speed bumps.

At 4,235mm- long, the Sienta has a wheelbase of 2,750mm and is 1,695mm- tall as well as 1,695mm- wide ( without mirrors) and was designed with safety in mind to achieve a five- star Asean NCAP rating.

Strong high- tensile steel has been used to strengthen the vehicle’s structure and the rear sliding doors have been equipped with reinforced bars.

A 42- litre fuel tank, feeds the front- mounted naturally aspirated 1.5- litre ( 1,496cc) 2NR- FE engine, with dual overhead camshafts and dual VVT- i for valve- lift.

Kayukawa says that this is the same engine found in the current Avanza, only it now has 2hp and 4Nm more, upping the performance to 106hp at 6,000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 4,200rpm.

“We have tuned the Sienta’s engine for more power as drivers in the Asean region preferred cars with better acceleration,” he said.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission ( CVT) with seven virtual gears to help provide a sporty drive.

As standard, the Sienta comes with an electric power steering system, front and rear disc brakes, MacPherson struts ( front) and torsion beam ( rear) with stabiliser bars, LED daytime running lights, rear fog lamps, rear wiper and door visors.

Inside, the cabin’s standard features include powered windows with driver auto- up/ down and antipinch function, second row 50: 50 split seats with one- touch tumble, third row 50: 50 split fold- flush seats, rear air conditioning vents and a six- speaker sound system.

As for standard safety features, there are three airbags, anti- lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, hill- start assist, reverse sensors and ISOFIX anchor points.

The entry- level 1.5G has 15- inch alloy wheels, automatic halogen headlights, single left side power- sliding door ( right- side is manual) and 2DIN player with CD/ radio/ MP3 playback, AUX- jack, USB port and Bluetooth connectivity.

The range- topping 1.5V gets 16- inch alloy wheels, automatic Bi- LED projectors headlamps with auto- levelling, dual side power- sliding doors, LED light guide position lamps, Optitron instrument cluster, colour TFT display, automatic climate control and a 6.8- inch touchscreen player with radio/ MP3 playback, voice recognition, AUX- jack, USB port and Bluetooth connectivity.

“The all- new Sienta has been developed for urban families who seek premium value and also want a trendy car with a unique design rather than a plain ‘ people- carrier’. The appearance of the model is indeed something quite different from the usual MPV”, said UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ismet Suki.
