IF you need a reason to watch this HBO comedy then here it is: Walton Goggins. If you need another reason, then let it be Danny McBride. Goggins and McBride play Lee Russell and Neal Gamby respectively, two vice principals at North Jackson High School who are both vying for the top job after their boss ( Bill Murray) resigns as principal to look after his ailing wife. When the school board sends in a stranger to fill the position — Dr Belinda Brown ( Kimberly Hebert Gregor), the two have little recourse but to team up to get her out before resuming their rivalry.
Here’s the thing, though: both Russell and Gamby lack any positive or admirable qualities that make them viable candidates for the job. They are petty and childish and really big buffoons who don’t seem to have the welfare of their students at heart. But they are extremely entertaining. Especially Goggins. And their buffoonery is incomparable. You’ll hate them, but you’ll love hating them. Vice Principals is by far my favourite comedy on TV at the moment. S.
airs every Monday at 10.30am ( prime time encore at 10.30pm) on HBO ( Astro Ch 411).
