(★★✩✩✩) OH, dear. Let’s hope it isn’t a wrap for Universal’s ambitious Dark Universe right out of the gate. This reboot – which has one visual link to the 1999 Brendan Fraser movie – features a female antagonist, effectively played by Sofia Boutella (Kingsman, Star Trek Beyond). Problem: rather than focus on her ambitious Princess Ahmanet, the film spends more time on Tom Cruise’s roguish character instead.
We get that he’s the big star in this, but a) Universal has already cheated on its source material by not having Imhotep (as played by Boris Karloff in the 1932 original, and Arnold Vosloo in 1999); and b) Ahmanet is so much more interesting as a character and portrayal, so why sideline her?
