(★★✩✩✩) OH, dear. Let’s hope it isn’t a wrap for Univer­sal’s am­bi­tious Dark Uni­verse right out of the gate. This re­boot – which has one vis­ual link to the 1999 Brendan Fraser movie – fea­tures a fe­male an­tag­o­nist, ef­fec­tively played by Sofia Boutella (Kings­man, Star Trek Be­yond). Prob­lem: rather than fo­cus on her am­bi­tious Princess Ah­manet, the film spends more time on Tom Cruise’s rogu­ish char­ac­ter in­stead.

We get that he’s the big star in this, but a) Univer­sal has al­ready cheated on its source ma­te­rial by not hav­ing Imhotep (as played by Boris Karloff in the 1932 orig­i­nal, and Arnold Vosloo in 1999); and b) Ah­manet is so much more in­ter­est­ing as a char­ac­ter and por­trayal, so why side­line her?
