IT started in 2010 as a multi-brand store. Since then, Exhibit has evolved and is now an established ready-to-wear womenswear label with complete collections designed in-house.

The person behind it is none other than Singapore’s “It” girl Yoyo Cao. The 29-year-old may not have any formal fashion training, but she certainly has an eye for what looks good on a woman.

“Designing my own pieces for Exhibit started when a friend approached me to style 15 looks for Singapore Fashion Week,” she told Vogue magazine last year. “I thought, ‘Why not design the clothes myself?’ ”

“We’re very much influenced by American culture, but because of our multicultural society and the fact that we’re exposed more and more to media from the East, it’s become a mix,” she said, about fashion in Singapore.

“I think more and more Singaporeans are starting to take fashion quite seriously. It is not just tank tops and flip-flops anymore. For an industry as small as Singapore’s, that’s a good sign.”

With androgyny and minimalism as the starting point of each season, Exhibit seeks to create indispensable, luxe basics that are mandatory in the modern woman’s wardrobe.

Cleverly tailored pieces that boast of clean-cut lines and pristine silhouettes are at the core of the collections. Yet, minimal as they are, each aspect is given a distinctive feature of its own.

For Pre-Fall 2017, Exhibit looks to convey modern femininity grounded in utilitarian details. The season’s collection offers a range of neutral-coloured pieces that can complete any look.

The overall line-up fuses femininity with an updated edge. Exaggerated proportions like voluminous sleeves and huge cargo pockets are used as masculine undertones conveyed through shape and silhouette.

Other design highlights include embellishments with burnished gold-tone irregular buttons. The key pieces also elevate everyday wear through use of check fabrics and contrast stitch details.

Exhibit even has its own online store. On the website (exhibitstore. co, which ships internationally), customers can shop for the latest collections, as well as discover the label’s latest inspirations.

Every first Wednesday of the month, Star2 will be highlighting fresh, cool fashion brands from Malaysia and around Asia. Want to see some of your favourites featured? Just drop us an email at star2@ thestar.com.my.

The label favours soft, structured pieces that make for great everyday wear.
