THE School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at KDU Penang University College was established in 1991.

It was the first to offer a Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management in northern Malaysia.

In 1997, endeavouring to be the best hospitality, tourism and culinary arts school in the region, KDU established a Swiss hotel school partnership with IMI Switzerland. It believes that to be at the top, students too have to start there.

It is now the only hospitality school in Malaysia to offer a complete international Swiss syllabus.

SHTCA’s partner school, the International Management Institute Switzerland (IMI), is a private school that offers cutting-edge hospitality education.

It is a renowned international hotel management school with strong links in all continents of the globe and its graduates can be found in senior management positions all around the world.

Their successes show the rewards from start at the top.

Training facilities are second to none, with professional commercial kitchens, standalone patisserie and garde manger demo kitchens, “Bon Appetit” fine-dining restaurant, an alfresco cafe “Bar 91”, a cocktail Mixology Lab and Event Management facilities.

Students also have hands-on experience in a mock-up Hospitality Training Suite and front office, developed in October 2013, in partnership with Holiday Inn Resort Penang; again a first in the nation.

SHTCA currently partners with Equatorial Hotel and renamed this as “Equatorial Suite”.

A combination of work and study modes are incorporated into the curriculum, thereby allowing students to transition easily from college to the workplace.

It is also a member of the International Federation of Ice Cream, Pastry and Chocolate (FIP), Penang Chef’s Association (PCA) and Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter.

Throughout the years, the school remains in close rapport with not only its industry partners, but also its students and staff.

The school is also under constant review by some leading industry practitioners who, as members of its advisory board, ensure compliance with best practice.

For their work experience leading to possible job outcomes, students can choose pathways from internship to management traineeship in global hotel groups from SHTCA’S worldwide network of top five-star hotels.

The international exposure gained from a worldwide internship placement gives KDU’s graduates an edge in experience and a wider global perspective.

The SHTCA’s graduates are employed as experts in renowned hotels and service-related industries all over the world, and will continue to be highly sought after in the past, the present and the future.
