WHO is Mrs K? In Ho Yuhang’s new movie, she is a mother (Kara Wai) on a harrowing mission to rescue her teenage daughter who has been kidnapped by a man from her past.
Mrs K unfolds without showing us anything about the former life of a seemingly normal housewife. As a viewer, it’s easy to get frustrated when the unseen story itself is intriguing. What we know is Mrs K was the mastermind behind a major crime incident and she’s basically a wanted woman.
Instead, director Ho wants us to focus on the consequences of Mrs K’s actions. The physical pain she bears from getting beaten by the man’s henchman (a scene-stealing Faizal Hussein) and the emotional trauma she has experienced due to her own past dealings. So why root for Mrs K? Because she’s a mother. We all hate to admit that sometimes the people we love have to do unsavoury things just to protect us.
Mrs K may not deliver on the action-packed moments we’ve come to expect from a former kung-fu star like Wai. But it has enough emotional punches to get you where it matters the most. In the end, you’d want to forget about Mrs K’s past and embrace her new identity. – Angelin Yeoh
