AF Megastar

The Star Malaysia - Star2 - - What To Watch -

THERE are some jaw-dropping performances so far on AF Megastar, where past winners and contestants of reality singing series Akademi Fantasia duke it out for the top prize.

Two episodes in, a pool of 24 AF alumni performed and only 12, chosen by a panel of judges, advanced to the weekly elimination rounds.

Idayu, who was eliminated prematurely on Season Three, came back with a vengeance, nailing Christina Aguilera’s Hurt with her Mariah Carey-like vocals (yes, she even demonstrated her whistle register).

Soft and demure singer Marsha transformed into a powerhouse vocalist delivering a spine-chilling rendition of Untuk Terakhir Kali.

While there were other standout performances by Bob, Amir Jahari, Indah (pic) and Syamel, the performances across the board aren’t as impressive as I had expected. After all, these are experienced singers.

I was surprised to find quite a number of contestants choosing the wrong songs, making technical mistakes or simply letting their nerves get the better of them. Let’s hope the top 12 does a better job in the upcoming episodes.

Ultimately, the appeal of AF Megastar is the feeling of nostalgia you get watching these past contestants perform and seeing how much they’ve grown.

And while you get that feeling especially from watching contestants from the early seasons perform (did you know Season One contestants Rosma and Khai are married and they have two kids now?), there were quite a number of AF alumni such as Mawi, Hafiz, Hazama and the original AF winner Vince missing from the line-up.

AF just does not feel like AF without them.
