THE race was engulfed in controversy when Sebastien Vettel disobeyed team orders to pass Red Bull Racing teammate Mark Webber for victory.
In the closing stages of the race, Webber was seen showing Vettel a rude sign after a pass on the main straight. A similar controversy also occurred with Mercedes when the faster Nico Rosberg was told not to pass Lewis Hamilton, who eventually finished third.
SIC recorded the highest number of attendance in 15 years with 123,400 spectators converging on the circuit. In a way, Vettel was back too.
The four-time world champion failed to register a single victory in a difficult final season with Red Bull in 2014.
Yet here he was, in just his second race for the famous Italian outfit, confidently seeing off the challenge of the all-conquering Mercedes team with a superb strategy call.
Lewis Hamilton retained his world title and his team Mercedes won the constructors’ championship for the second year running.
