Get a head start in medical school

FOR aspiring medical doctors, the next stage of their education after A-Levels may be a daunting step to consider, especially since the transition can be overwhelming.

One of the many benefits of Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia’s (NUMed) Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Science is that the transition is made easy.

NUMed provides students with ample preparation through hands-on classes such as An Introduction to Anatomy and a focused syllabus such as Foundation of Medical Studies.

As an alternative to A-Levels, NUMed’s 12-month foundation course offers a more efficient route to medical school.

Students who undertake the course in Newcastle University UK’s fully owned medical campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, are taught physics, chemistry, biology, maths, English, science, engineering and medical studies as these subjects are vital in the field of medicine.

Smooth transition

NUMed undergraduate Noor Faridah commented on the transition from the foundation certificate to medical school:

“It was smooth. The admissions team and the foundation programme director were fantastic in helping us apply for the medical programme, particularly by preparing us for the medical school interviews.”

As such, students have full academic support throughout the duration of their university studies as they are assigned a personal tutor.

The foundation year also offers study skills, information technology and well-being support.

“The study skills module was a particular favourite of mine. I find this module unique as I have not seen any other institution teaching these types of lessons,” Noor Faridah said.

“As undergraduates, we are not given a crash course on how to study or do referencing, so I have benefitted a lot from this.”

On campus, foundation students are integrated with undergraduate students, which gives them a head start in adjusting to university life and having tailored modules.

“Even my English teacher from NUMed noticed that the foundation students were different from the other students in the sense that we already knew what to do in our first week of medical school,” Noor Faridah said.

Valuable learning experience

Medical student Pang Yeo Si successfully completed the foundation course and secured a place at NUMed.

“There are some important skills that I learnt from the foundation course that could be applied to my undergraduate course,” Pang said.

“I would like to highlight one of the skills that has helped me a lot, which is the skill of scientific writing.

“I was exposed to scientific writing in my foundation year and it is incredibly useful to me now.

“My friends who studied other pre-university courses sometimes encounter difficulties when it comes to scientific writing.

“I chose to enrol in the foundation course so that I could be exposed to both clinical and lab skills before the undergraduate course.

“I was able to get a clearer idea of the undergraduate course I wanted to take. The foundation certificate has prepared me for the BMS course,” Pang added.

Pang and Faridah are just two of many students who have experienced a successful transition from the foundation course to medical school.

UK study opportunities

Newcastle University UK’s international branch campus in Iskandar Puteri provides undergraduate degrees in medicine (MBBS) and the biomedical sciences (BSc).

Both programmes offer opportunities for periods of study in the UK.

A one-year foundation certificate in biological and biomedical sciences is also available, the successful completion of which will lead to progression to the MBBS or BSc (Hons) biomedical sciences programme.

All programmes of study are equivalent to those of Newcastle’s UK-based provision and lead to the award of the same degrees.

By choosing to study at NUMed Malaysia, students will obtain a reputable UK qualification from an internationally recognised university at a cost significantly less than that of studying in the UK.
