A different kind of engineering

-

LOCATED at Bandar Seri Alam, Pasir Gudang, Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology (UniKL MITEC) Johor, offers the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Facilities Maintenance Engineering degree programme, which is accredited by the Malaysia Qualification Agencies and Board of Engineering Malaysia.

Facility maintenance works are defined as the latest technology for the planning, preparation and maintenance of an effective living environment.

The aim of the programme is to produce graduates who are professionals with leadership skills, knowledgeable and competent, who are able to manage a plant as well as to serve industrial needs in technical, facilities and safety management while respecting the environment.

The courses offered are in line with current market needs that require skilled and semi-skilled workers in critical areas focusing on the knowledge of maintenance.

Throughout the programme, these engineers or technologist students will be taught the concept of maintenance, ensuring equipment are kept in optimum condition and efficiency with a long operation lifespan.

Students will also be taught to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and independent workers as the field is filled with a variety of challenges.

The programme combines theory and practical knowledge in laboratory sessions, and workshops. They will complete course assignments that mimic project work in the field.

Many of the equipment used in laboratories and workshops are of high quality and are in line with those used in the industry.

Therefore, students will benefit from early exposure to hi-tech equipment used in industries. This will also remove the culture shock upon entering the workforce.

Students will also be involved in community services and various other activities.

The required skills and knowledge that students will learn include operating the boiler system, HVAC systems, hydraulic and pneumatic system, compressor system, bearing and rigging system, welding, heat and pump system, basic electrical, fire warning systems (fire alarm), computer maintenance management system (CMMS), electrical control devices and safety, plus more.

The course is designed specially for employment into the automotive, oil and gas, petrochemical, electronics, heavy industry and power plant industries.

They can also diversify into service sectors such as the hospital, government and private buildings.

Graduates in this course would have vast employment opportunities. Among them are facility maintenance engineer technologist, M&E engineers technologist, boiler man, steam engineers, lift/escalator inspector, TPM engineer, CBM engineers, renewable energy and green technology engineer technologist and other positions related to maintenance jobs.

The programme not only provides knowledge on maintenance but also offers a platform for students to earn a professional certification in the OSHA, boiler man, welding inspection, energy manager or AutoCAD and solid work, as added value.
