Ac­cord­ing to Dr Chan Siew Pheng, con­sul­tant en­docri­nol­o­gist at Subang Jaya Med­i­cal Cen­tre, di­a­betes treat­ment must be tai­lored to the in­di­vid­ual.

Fac­tors that are taken into con­sid­er­a­tion in­clude age, body weight and his­tory of other med­i­cal con­di­tions such as heart dis­ease, stroke and re­nal im­pair­ment.

This as­sess­ment will then help doc­tors de­ter­mine a treat­ment plan for the pa­tient, cov­er­ing health goals and guide­lines that in­clude: Rec­om­mended diet Tar­geted blood glu­cose level (A1c level)

Rec­om­mended ex­er­cise in­ten­sity

Tar­geted blood pres­sure and choles­terol lev­els
